You’ve been selected for the Excellent Alumni in Healthcare campaign. What does this recognition mean to you?

As a member of this campaign, I am grateful to have the opportunity to work alongside so many other inspiring individuals. Pepperdine University chose me, and I hope I can show how essential mental health is along with physical health. A lot of people don’t realise how intertwined our minds and bodies are, and I’m grateful that Pepperdine University taught me and gave me this opportunity.

Describe How You Got To Where You Are Now

This journey hasn’t been a cakewalk, but it has been well worth it. By working at an eating disorder clinic while I was still in school, I was able to get my foot in the door and begin my career. My then-boyfriend (now-husband) introduced me to the power of YouTube during that time, and I saw exactly how misunderstood mental diseases were. He exhorted me to disseminate what little knowledge I had about eating disorders or how to treat them so that others would benefit. Video content that I produced has grown over time because nothing happens in such a vacuum, and I’ve tried to answer viewers’ inquiries by tailoring my films to their needs. Eight years ago, I decided to devote my time & education toward breaking the stigma of mental illness and encouraging individuals who are suffering to get treatment. A million people have joined our community, and it’s still growing! If it weren’t for Pepperdine University, I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish anything.

Who Has Aided You In Achieving Your Professional Goals?

When it comes to my achievement, my spouse Sean has been a big part of the equation. When I first launched the channel, he was the driving force behind it, and that he has produced every single one of my videos. His patience, kindness, and encouragement have made it possible for me to accomplish so much.

Explain A Lesson You’ve Taken Away From A Difficult Period In Your Professional Or Personal Life.

I’ve learned the most important lesson of all: never quit up. My success as a therapist or YouTuber has been largely due to my perseverance and consistency, even though we’ve all heard this before. In 2017 I was trying to sell an idea for a novel. People frequently don’t know to ask for something they don’t understand, which is why I wrote this book as a type of introduction to mental health. No was the answer in meeting after meeting for my agency and me. However, we persevered, assessing the comments we received in each meeting to see if it was constrictive. It wasn’t until we connected with an editor who fully understood the significance of such a book that we were able to complete “Are you ok? : A Guide to Care for Our Mental Health”. With that editor, I’m already hard at work on my next book, which will be on trauma and launched in December of 2019. So don’t give up, believe in yourself, but you’ll meet a person who sees your genuine worth in the end.

What Do You Have Planned For The Future?

Since starting “Ask Kati Anything,” a podcast in which listeners may ask questions in greater depth, I’ve been working on the manuscript with my next book, which will be about trauma. Every Monday, I post new videos to my YouTube channel in the hopes that they’ll be helpful to someone.
